Monthly Close Checklist

A month is not closed because you stopped looking at it.

Twenty steps, one page, twelve months. Close the books the same way every time.

Checklist. Twenty steps across six areas — bank and cash, income, expenses, contractors, taxes, review — each marked Done month by month. Quarterly steps only count in March, June, September and December. Turn off any step that doesn't apply to you and it stops counting against you. Each month shows its own progress, and a status: Closed, or Open.

Reconciliation. Bank and credit card, twelve months each. Statement balance, deposits in transit, outstanding checks, book balance — and the difference, which has to be zero. A month that's off says "Off — find it" rather than pretending.

Health Check. The one that matters: months marked Closed where the bank was never reconciled. A month is not closed until the difference is zero, whatever the checklist says. It also counts half-finished reconciliations and months that are off, so nothing quietly stays broken.
